Los Angeles had kid TV shows such as Sheriff (“put another candle on my birthday cake”) John, who was a sheriff, and Engineer Bill (“red light green light”), who was a railroad engineer, but there was also Soupy Sales, who was a sleazy dude living in a shack with a mean dog, and a nice dog –really low budget creativity like Earnie Kovacs, a radio in his shack even though he was on television, and his girlfriend Peaches,

who was Soupy in drag!

 Joan Crawford

requested the part of Blanch in the film “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?” Joan also recommended Bettie Davis for the part of Baby Jane Hudson!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This was perfect as in the 1930s you could argue that Joan was better looking, but Bettie perhaps more talented as an actress.

The movie was really successful, and Joan and Bettie were going to make another movie together, but the animosity level was too high. Joan, who was on the board of directors of Pepsi Cola, quit the proposed film.

The author (Henry Farrell) of “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane” is a really fantastic writer. I wish I could write that good!

Also, in the movie “Whatever happened to Baby Jane,” the nosy neighbors next door had a Keane print hanging on their wall thus:

The father in this story was an Attorney. Apparently, the Archers were a prosperous family, and extrapolating backward, the great depression was merely a speed bump for them.

Meet Corliss Archer” was first published in 1942, when the outcome of the war was still uncertain.
My copy was published in 1944, and according to what was written inside by a previous owner, was presented as a gift on Dec 1945, with Europe and Asia in rubble, people in the USA must have felt rather smug back then, whereas since 1968 we have been gradually declining ever since. (Actually, you could argue that 1968 was a point of inflection, and the actual decline began around 1977.)

“Butterfield 8” revisited

The movie “Butterfield 8” was made and set in the sixties, with call girl Liz Taylor driving a T-Bird –just like mom! (Did someone from the movie studio spot my mom driving around the San Fernando Valley back then?)

Calling Butterfield 8

Oh! the novel upon which the movie was based took place during the great depression!

I have always been facinated by the 1930s. Things were so real then.
Go into the CCC until the war, then either into the Armed Forces or if physically unable, to work in a defense plant or ship yard.

Also, several movies in the seventies were based on events from the thirties:

“Paper Moon,” “Bonnie and Clyde,” “Day of the Locusts,” “Hard Times,” “Boxcar Bertha,” and my favorite “They Shoot Horses Don’t They?” Plus many more.

from Wikipedia:

Gracie Allen

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

(July 26, 1895 – August 27, 1964), was an American comedienne who became internationally famous as the zany partner and comic foil of husband George Burns. For contributions to the television industry, Gracie Allen was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6672 Hollywood Boulevard. She and George Burns are also both members of the Television Hall of Fame, having earned joint induction in 1988.

Gracie Allen was born in San Francisco, California.

She soon began performing Irish folk dances with her three sisters, who were billed as “The Four Colleens.” In 1909 Allen joined her sister, Bessie, as a vaudeville performer. At a performance in 1922 Allen met George Burns and the two formed a comedy act. The two were married on January 7, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio.

Gracie Allen was born with heterochromia, giving her two different color eyes; one blue and one green.
Birth date mystery

Depending on the source, Gracie Allen is alleged to have been born on July 26 in 1895, 1896, 1902 or 1906. All public records held by the City and County of San Francisco were destroyed in the earthquake and great fire of April 1906.

Among Allen’s signature jokes was a dialogue in which Allen would claim that she was born in 1906, her foil would press her for proof or corroborating information; she would say that her birth certificate had been destroyed in the earthquake, her foil would point out that she was born in July but the earthquake was three months earlier in April, and Allen would simply smile and reply “Well, it was an awfully big earthquake.”

Surrealistic Writing

um hi

************************************************************

An attempt at surrealistic writing:

I came upon the water from an unexpected direction, finding a poster of myself floating there. The poster looked something like a movie poster with both words and illustration. I pulled the poster out of the water and went into the nearby bathroom. After finishing my business, I left the poster there for others to gawk at, but later thought I would want the poster as a curiosity and a keepsake, but now it was gone. So, I returned quickly to the water hoping to find another poster, which I did, but a wave crashed over it as they were no doubt expecting me this time! I then went downtown and heard a horse galloping. Whereupon I looked and saw it was Zorro pasting a poster

burlesque

of me on the wall of the building! I knew they were after me for the crime of enticement. Two of them grabbed me. it was their job to prepare me for the ordeal. Applying debilitating  cream, then dressing me as a school girl wearing lacy bobby socks, loafers, plaid skirt, blouse, and with my hair in pigtails, I was now ready!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I knew there was no escape as the pederasts were gathering for the gang bang of me by the sodomites. I thought perhaps i should poop before the event. They swarmed me and were shoving their apendages into my orifices, one after the other, then I awoke.

Patty Duke on Shirley Temple

from Entertainment Weekly:

Patty Duke

ruled the 1960s, winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at 16 for The Miracle Worker and later starring in her eponymous sitcom. Starting her career at just 7, Duke has unique insight into the life of a child star, and the specific challenges they face as they grow up in the public eye. Duke opened up about those struggles in her memoir, Call Me Anna, which showed how she overcame her own difficult obstacles.

With the sad news that perhaps the most famous child star of all time, Shirley Temple,

passed away Monday night, EW spoke with Duke to discuss Temple’s influence on her, her own on-set experiences, and why she thinks so many child stars struggle once they hit adulthood.

I don’t know a whole lot about Shirley Temple’s home life or background to get what we saw on film. Except, having been almost in her shoes I know that that little girl worked hours and hours and hours and I hope somebody treated her very kindly. Every mother wanted their daughter to be Shirley Temple. I had very straight hair and my mother used to drive me crazy curling my hair so that I could look like Shirley Temple. Didn’t work!

As a child, I idolized Shirley the movie star. My favorite Shirley Temple movies were the ones that had her incredible singing and dancing and dimples, but then she’d do a scene that was serious and I would be sobbing for days. The mold had been broken. There was only one Shirley Temple. But look, she’ll live on: When we go to a restaurant, my grandchildren order a Shirley Temple.

When the new Zody’s store (sort of like a Kmart –by the way I still have my life time Gemco membership card, even though they went belly-up years ago) opened in Burbank, Smiley Burnett (one of Gene Autry’s sidekicks), and Linda Kaye

from “Petticoat Junction” were there. Burnett had a big roll of what looked liked tickets. He would tear off a “ticket” handing them to the people in line as an autograph. It didn’t even look like he signed them. It looked more like his signature was printed on them! After a few years, I threw mine away. Whereas, my uncle, who worked at Universal Studio, obtained a personally autographed photograph from Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. It was one of his prized possessions –really cool.

He once took over the Enterprise, when Captain Kirk, Spock, Scotty, the communications officer, the doctor, George Takai,  and even the Russian guy beamed down to some planet.

Also, my mom was going with a gofer at the studios, who acquired a Star Trek script, which I tried to rip off from him, but before he left :”Hey! Where’s that script!?” Somehow I knew it would have value in the future.
