Wikipedia:     Cross Creek is a 1983 film starring Mary Steenburgen

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

as The Yearling author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. The film is directed by Martin Ritt and is based, in part, on Rawlings’ 1942 memoir, Cross Creek.

“Hyacinth Drift,” by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings first published in Scribner’s Magazine, September 1933.

Brie:     I love the idea of a female Huck Finn (Dess) taking a trip down a river as found in Hyacinth Drift! Perhaps its my imagination, but is Rawlings cryptically describing a lesbian affair!?

“Dess cranked the motor and they waved after us. Dess began to whistle, shrilly and tunelessly. She is an astonishing young woman. She was born and raised in rural Florida and guns and campfires and fishing-rods and creeks are corpuscular in her blood. She lives a sophisticate’s life around worldly people. At the slightest excuse she steps out of civilization, naked and relived, as I should step out of a soiled chemise. She is ten years my junior, but she calls me, with much tenderness, pitying my incapabilities, “Young un.”

&

“I lay on my back in a torment of weariness, but there was no rest. I had never lain in so naked a place, bared so flatly to the sky. The moon swung high over us and there was no sleeping for the brightness. Toward morning dewdrops collected over the netting as though the moonlight had crystallized. I fell asleep under a diamond curtain and wakened with warm full sunlight on my face.

&

We had hot baths out of a bucket that night, and sat on the cabin steps in pajamas while the fire died down. Suddenly the soft night turned silver. The moon was rising. We lay on our cots a long time wakeful because of beauty.”

& [rather butch]

Dess strapped around her waist the leather belt that held her bowie knife at one hip and her revolver at the other, and felt better prepared”

Charles Pierce

CharlesPierce2

(July 14, 1926 – May 31, 1999) was one of the 20th century’s foremost female impersonators, particularly noted for his impersonation of Bette Davis.

Born in Watertown, New York, he began his show business career playing the organ and acting in radio dramas at station WWNY. He branched out into a comedy routine, attired in tuxedo, yet managing to evoke eerily convincing imitations of popular movie actresses. Eschewing the term drag queen, which he hated, he billed himself as a male actress.

Initially playing in small gay clubs, his fame spread. He took up residence in San Francisco, where his act became well known to Hollywood stars. As he toured, his costuming became more elaborate, initially adding small props, later full costume and makeup changes. His imitations were imitated by other female impersonators; and his roles included Bette Davis, Mae West, Tallulah Bankhead, Gloria Swanson, Carol Channing, Katharine Hepburn, and Joan Crawford,

joan crawford

which became the drag queen canon. His act was centered on wit rather than accurate mimicry, though it was often said that he looked more like Joan Collins than did Joan Collins herself.

Carol Channing was the only Hollywood celebrity Charles “impersonated” who actually saw his act. She went backstage after a show at Gold Street in San Francisco (c. 1972) and said, “Cheee-yarles: you do me better than I do!”

He performed at many clubs in New York, including The Village Gate, Ted Hook’s OnStage, The Ballroom, and Freddy’s Supper Club. His numerous San Francisco venues included the Gilded Cage, Cabaret/After Dark, Gold Street, Bimbo’s 365 Club, Olympus, The Plush Room, the Venetian Room at the Fairmont Hotel, Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall, and the War Memorial Opera House.

He was a guest actor on an episode of TV’s Wonder Woman and played a cross-dressing villain in an episode of Laverne & Shirley (“Murder on the Moose Jaw Express”). Pierce also appeared on an early episode of the hit 80’s TV sitcom Designing Women as a steward on a cruise ship. During the episode, he imitates Joan Collins (as the ship’s waitress) and Bette Davis (as the ship’s lounge entertainment).
He died in North Hollywood, California, aged 72.

Ladybugs is a sports-comedy family film released in 1992 starring Rodney Dangerfield and directed by Sidney J. Furie.

Dangerfield plays a businessman who takes over a girls soccer team which the company he works for sponsors. The film also stars Jackée Harry as his assistant coach, Ilene Graff as his girlfriend, Jonathan Brandis as his girlfriend’s son (and soon to be star of the team) and Vinessa Shaw as the boss’s daughter and Matthew’s love interest.

Then Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda has a cameo, as do Blake Clark and longtime Dangerfield friend Chuck McCann.
Chester Lee (Rodney Dangerfield) is desperate for a promotion at work. To impress his boss, he claims to have been a good soccer player in his youth and is badgered into coaching a girls’ team called the Ladybugs. Dragging his assistant Julie (Jackée Harry) along as assistant coach, Chester figures the gig easy as the Ladybugs, sponsored by his company, are a dynasty. Unfortunately, only one player has returned. The team, which includes the boss’s daughter, Kimberly (Vinessa Shaw), are clueless, make a dreadful start to the season and the boss is less than impressed.

In his personal life, Chester is engaged to Bess (Ilene Graff), who has a son, Matthew (Jonathan Brandis), from a previous marriage. Matthew just happens to be a great athlete, but poor grades get him kicked off the soccer team. Chester invites Matthew to watch the Ladybugs practice and to get some tips. Matthew has a crush on Kimberly from school and it is partly due to this that Chester persuades him to dress like a girl and play for the team under the name Martha.

“Infamous” is a 2006 American drama film based on the 1997 book by George Plimpton, Truman Capote: In Which Various Friends, Enemies, Acquaintances, and Detractors Recall His Turbulent Career. It covers the period from the late 1950s through the mid-1960s, during which Truman Capote researched and wrote his bestseller In Cold Blood.

Capote is played by Toby Jones. Sandra Bullock,

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Daniel Craig, Lee Pace and Jeff Daniels also have featured roles, with a supporting cast that includes Sigourney Weaver and Hope Davis and a song performance by Gwyneth Paltrow.

According to writer/director Douglas McGrath in his DVD commentary, many of the scenes in Infamous, most notably a dramatic sexual encounter between Capote and inmate Perry Smith (played by Craig), occurred only in McGrath’s imagination.
Truman Capote, known in New York City society for his wit and fashion flair as much as he is recognized in literary circles as the celebrated writer of Other Voices, Other Rooms and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, reads a brief article about the murder of a farming family in Holcomb, Kansas, in the back pages of the New York Times of November 16, 1959.

Curious as to how the residents would react to a brutal massacre in their midst, the author and his friend, Harper Lee

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

(Sandra Bullock), travel from New York to the rural Midwestern town, ostensibly so Capote can interview people for a magazine article. Once there, he realizes there might be enough material for what he eventually describes as a nonfiction novel.

“Noel Neill

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

(born November 25, 1920) is an American actress in motion pictures and television. She is best known for her portrayal of Lois Lane in the film serials Superman (1948) and Atom Man vs. Superman (1950), as well as the 1950s television series Adventures of Superman.

Neill was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota; her father was a journalist, and her mother a dancer on the stage.

In her teens, Noel was a popular photographic model. While Betty Grable’s pin-up was #1 among GIs during World War II, Noel Neill ranked next. Noel also worked as a professional singer and dancer, signed up by Bing Crosby.

Signing a contract with Paramount Pictures led to appearances in many of the studio’s feature films and short subjects. In the mid-1940s Noel had a leading role in one of Monogram Pictures’ wayward-youth melodramas, and she became a familiar face in Monogram features for the next several years, especially in the recurring role of Betty Rogers.

Noel appears in the last of the original Charlie Chan movies, Sky Dragon (1949), and also played damsels in distress in Monogram westerns and Republic Pictures serials.

In 1945 producer Sam Katzman gave Noel Neill the recurring role of Betty Rogers, aggressive reporter for a high-school newspaper, in his series of “Teen Agers” musical comedies, beginning with Junior Prom in 1946. When Katzman was casting his Superman serial for Columbia Pictures, he remembered Noel Neill’s newshawk portrayals and signed her to play Lois Lane. She played the role in the film serials Superman (1948) and Atom Man vs. Superman (1950), with Kirk Alyn portraying Superman/Clark Kent.

When Adventures of Superman came to television in 1951, veteran movie actors George Reeves and Phyllis Coates took the leading roles for the first season. By the time the series found a sponsor and a network time slot, Coates had committed herself to another production, so the producers called on Noel Neill, who had played Lois Lane in the movies. She continued in the role for five seasons until the series went off the air in 1958. She was scheduled to appear in the seventh season with co-star Jack Larson in 1960, but after the tragic and sudden death of Superman actor George Reeves, the seventh season was cancelled, officially ending the show.

While Phyllis Coates generally distanced herself from the role, Noel Neill embraced her association with Lois Lane,

lois

giving frequent talks on college campuses during the 1970s, when interest in the series was revived, endearing herself to audiences with her warmth and humor.

In 2003, an authorized biography of Neill was published. It was entitled Truth, Justice, & The American Way: The Life And Times Of Noel Neill, The Original Lois Lane by Larry Thomas Ward. Ward later wrote another book, Beyond Lois Lane in 2007 which focused on Neill’s other acting work and modeling work presented in an array of rare publicity stills, studio press releases, film reviews, newspaper commentaries, and candid photographs.

On June 15, 2010, the southern Illinois city of Metropolis, Illinois (the city that calls itself the “official home of Superman”), unveiled a statue of Lois Lane. The Lois Lane statue is modeled on Noel Neill.”

After graduating in May of 1940 from Flint Northern High, she worked as a telephone operator for Michigan Bell until she won a contest as “Rodeo Queen”. The prize was a contract with MGM in Hollywood. When she arrived in California she stayed at the “Studio Club”, a residence for young actresses. Her roommate there was Donna Reed.

Harry Musk is one in a million. That means, It’s a Small World tells us, that he’s the one out of a million children who is perfectly proportioned but will never grow larger than a typical six-year-old. Adult, pint-sized Harry (Paul Dale) longs to be part of the big world. But more often than not, that world mocks him as an oddity or exploits his eagerness to be acknowledged for what he really is: a living, breathing man with normal feelings and desires. This celluloid plea for acceptance, which features Will Geer (The Waltons) and noir icon Steve Brodie (Bodyguard, Out of the Past) among the supporting players, comes from a perhaps unexpected source. William Castle – known later for creating clever ways to hype his House on Haunted Hill, 13 Ghosts and other cult faves – directs and co-writes.

her knees together. She sat there with her knees wide apart, her firm and attractive inner legs visible.”

“Audrey Steele

crispy and haughty perfection of her graying curles. He thought that here was the only woman her age who could wear so much scent and get away with it. He was sure, too, that she got away with only a panty girdle, and that her rather
small breasts  were not quite as firm as she made them look. There was something touching about her slimness — the nice legs in their sheer hose, the unused suppleness of her waist and hips, the wasted flat belly…”
