“Noel Neill

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

(born November 25, 1920) is an American actress in motion pictures and television. She is best known for her portrayal of Lois Lane in the film serials Superman (1948) and Atom Man vs. Superman (1950), as well as the 1950s television series Adventures of Superman.

Neill was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota; her father was a journalist, and her mother a dancer on the stage.

In her teens, Noel was a popular photographic model. While Betty Grable’s pin-up was #1 among GIs during World War II, Noel Neill ranked next. Noel also worked as a professional singer and dancer, signed up by Bing Crosby.

Signing a contract with Paramount Pictures led to appearances in many of the studio’s feature films and short subjects. In the mid-1940s Noel had a leading role in one of Monogram Pictures’ wayward-youth melodramas, and she became a familiar face in Monogram features for the next several years, especially in the recurring role of Betty Rogers.

Noel appears in the last of the original Charlie Chan movies, Sky Dragon (1949), and also played damsels in distress in Monogram westerns and Republic Pictures serials.

In 1945 producer Sam Katzman gave Noel Neill the recurring role of Betty Rogers, aggressive reporter for a high-school newspaper, in his series of “Teen Agers” musical comedies, beginning with Junior Prom in 1946. When Katzman was casting his Superman serial for Columbia Pictures, he remembered Noel Neill’s newshawk portrayals and signed her to play Lois Lane. She played the role in the film serials Superman (1948) and Atom Man vs. Superman (1950), with Kirk Alyn portraying Superman/Clark Kent.

When Adventures of Superman came to television in 1951, veteran movie actors George Reeves and Phyllis Coates took the leading roles for the first season. By the time the series found a sponsor and a network time slot, Coates had committed herself to another production, so the producers called on Noel Neill, who had played Lois Lane in the movies. She continued in the role for five seasons until the series went off the air in 1958. She was scheduled to appear in the seventh season with co-star Jack Larson in 1960, but after the tragic and sudden death of Superman actor George Reeves, the seventh season was cancelled, officially ending the show.

While Phyllis Coates generally distanced herself from the role, Noel Neill embraced her association with Lois Lane,

lois

giving frequent talks on college campuses during the 1970s, when interest in the series was revived, endearing herself to audiences with her warmth and humor.

In 2003, an authorized biography of Neill was published. It was entitled Truth, Justice, & The American Way: The Life And Times Of Noel Neill, The Original Lois Lane by Larry Thomas Ward. Ward later wrote another book, Beyond Lois Lane in 2007 which focused on Neill’s other acting work and modeling work presented in an array of rare publicity stills, studio press releases, film reviews, newspaper commentaries, and candid photographs.

On June 15, 2010, the southern Illinois city of Metropolis, Illinois (the city that calls itself the “official home of Superman”), unveiled a statue of Lois Lane. The Lois Lane statue is modeled on Noel Neill.”

When the new Zody’s store (sort of like a Kmart –by the way I still have my life time Gemco membership card, even though they went belly-up years ago) opened in Burbank, Smiley Burnett (one of Gene Autry’s sidekicks), and Linda Kaye

from “Petticoat Junction” were there. Burnett had a big roll of what looked liked tickets. He would tear off a “ticket” handing them to the people in line as an autograph. It didn’t even look like he signed them. It looked more like his signature was printed on them! After a few years, I threw mine away. Whereas, my uncle, who worked at Universal Studio, obtained a personally autographed photograph from Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. It was one of his prized possessions –really cool.

Substitute teacher was trying to make it as an actor.

He once took over the Enterprise, when Captain Kirk, Spock, Scotty, the communications officer, the doctor, George Takai,  and even the Russian guy beamed down to some planet.

Also, my mom was going with a gofer at the studios, who acquired a Star Trek script, which I tried to rip off from him, but before he left :”Hey! Where’s that script!?” Somehow I knew it would have value in the future.

um hi

from the Daily Breeze

HAWTHORNE:

She was once a grande dame of society, hosting a U.S. president, A-list movie stars and entertainers, the Mafia and, more recently, aerospace workers, jockeys and horse-racing aficionados. But the years took a toll, and she’s now a forgotten relic – a footnote of a bygone era to some,an eyesore to others.

Her future is anybody’s guess.Built at Imperial Highway and Hawthorne Boulevard in the 1950s by reputed Mafia associate Andrew Lococo, Hawthorne’s Cockatoo Inn

quickly became one of the South Bay’s premier hot spots, featuring 210 guest rooms and numerous meeting rooms amid sprawling grounds laid out like a secret garden. It gained a reputation for fine food, grand banquet halls and elegant European decor, including an L-shaped bar of brass and red leather. Male patrons were not allowed in without neckties. President Kennedy stayed there, as did his Air Force One pilots and his younger brother, Robert. A photo of the presidential plane, autographed by its pilots, still hangs on a hotel wall, Mayor Larry Guidi said. One rumor has it that the Kennedy brothers brought Marilyn Monroe

to Room 200 for a discreet rendezvous.

Its fortunes began to decline in the 1990s, when the recession decimated the aerospace industry and surrounding neighborhoods deteriorated. Hawthorne sued the Cockatoo in 1991 for $109,000 in unpaid bed taxes, and the owners declared bankruptcy the next year.”

from brie:

For a while Whitey was the maitre d for the cockatoo Inn. Whitey had to work an extra shift there. So, we went into a nearby store, where I purchased a plastic model of a V-1 buzz bomb, which I glued together in the car, while Whitey worked his shift. Before the restaurant opened, I went in and was served a Shirley Temple (drink)! The Cockatoo Inn had sterling silverware with “Cockatoo Inn” stamped on the pieces.

Each day whitey would swipe a piece of the flatware. Over the years our stash of the Cockatoo Inn silverware gradually disappeared, until there was only one spoon remaining, and, eventually, that last spoon disappeared too! One time Whitey ripped off some filet mignon — yum! The Cockatoo Inn was in the filming of various lounge scenes from the Quentin Tarantino Film, “Jackie Brown.”

Another time dropped off at Disneyland. started to get bored, since i had  been there so many times. I wanted to see what was behind the scenes, not easy, but I managed to get over to the geyser attraction, which has a small railroad running through it. Suddenly, someone shouts “There she is!”
I take off running,

but the two dudes soon chase me down. “I thought that was a girl!” one of them blurts out. They take me to an office, where I am lectured about not going to restricted areas. I pass through a door, and am on Main Street, where Walt Disney had a secret apartment above the firehouse. On the car radio driving back to San Clemente:

“Tore your dress

What a mess

I confess

danke schoen.”
