An acquaintance of mine was complaining that he had to read “Ivanhoe” and write a book report on it to pass English, and therefore graduate from high school.
He wasn’t much of a reader, and the book was kicking his ass. So I said call Cherokee books in Hollywood, and ask if they have a Classic Comics “Ivanhoe”. So, he did and was able to pass English. In all fairness to this person after school he worked at his family’s appliance store. This was before the big box stores took over the world!
At the appliance store he listened to Joe Pyne on the radio and played chess, while waiting for things to do like waiting on customers and delivering and installing washing machines. He was a talented artist, enough to make a living at it, after returning from Viet Nam, and a job at the Post Office.
