was born Donna Belle Mullenger on a farm near Denison, Iowa,  the eldest of five children.  After graduating from Denison High School, Reed planned to become a teacher, but was unable to pay for college. She decided to move to California to attend Los Angeles City College on the advice of her aunt. While attending college, she performed in various stage productions but had no plans to become an actress. After receiving several offers to screen test for studios, Reed eventually signed with MGM, but insisted on finishing her education first. Her career spanned more than 40 years, with performances in more than 40 films.  In 1953, she received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Lorene Burke in the war drama From Here to Eternity.

Reed is probably most widely known for her work in television, notably as Donna Stone, a middle-class American mother and housewife in the sitcom The Donna Reed Show (1958–66), in which her character was more assertive than most other television mothers of the era. She received numerous Emmy Award nominations for this role and the Golden Globe Award for Best TV Star in 1963.

In 1941 after signing with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Reed made her film debut in The Get-Away opposite Robert Sterling; she was billed as Donna Adams. MGM soon changed her name to Donna Reed, as there was anti-German feeling during World War II. She starred in The Courtship of Andy Hardy and had a supporting role with Edward Arnold in Eyes in the Night (1942). In 1943, she appeared in The Human Comedy with Mickey Rooney, and in They Were Expendable in 1945.

Her “girl-next-door” good looks and warm onstage personality made her a popular pin-up for many GIs during World War II. She personally answered letters from many GIs serving overseas.

In 1945, Reed struggled with an English accent and with a passive, underwritten role as Gladys Hallward in the first cinema adaptation of the Oscar Wilde novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Following the release of It’s a Wonderful Life, Reed appeared in Green Dolphin Street (1947) with Lana Turner and Van Heflin. In 1949 she expressed a desire for better roles.[7] Several years later, she performed in Scandal Sheet (1952).

In 1953, Reed played the role of Alma “Lorene” Burke, girlfriend of Montgomery Clift’s character, in the World War II drama From Here to Eternity. The role earned Reed an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for 1953.[8]

From 1958 to 1966, Reed starred in The Donna Reed Show, a television series produced by her then-husband, Tony Owen. The show featured her as Donna Stone, the wife of pediatrician Alex Stone (Carl Betz) and mother of Jeff (Paul Petersen) and Mary Stone (Shelley Fabares). The show ran for eight seasons on ABC. Reed won a Golden Globe Award and earned four Emmy Award nominations for her work on the series.”

Brie:

Years ago living somewhere along highway 101 in California between Frisco and LA, there was a drive-in movie which occasionally showed adult films, which were mostly soft core, though one time they showed some hard core with the penetration smudged out. Almost forgot to mention that the screen could be seen from the highway!
Usually, before the movie they would play such tunes on the speaker as “Mind Games” by John Lennon, while I was in my Vega listening, then during the movie a trip to  the snack bar. Sometime during the movie, I might sneak my hand on my private parts during the sex scenes– never got caught unlike Pee Wee Herman, who got busted in a Florida theater. You could get away with more in your own car as opposed to a public theater . Saw “Flesh Gordon” starring Hillary Summers

acting under another name.The house I was renting was next to an oil well, which looked like a giant grasshopper as someone put antenna on it. Also, the house was within easy walking distance to a Kmart–bigger than Walmart back then!
I do believe that Patty Hearst was driven down that highway on their way to the S.L.A. shootout in Los Angeles– though Patty missed the actual shootout.

Almost forgot to mention that there was a Pussycat movie theater showing X-rated movies in a nearby hick town, though I never went in there back then.

Last Chance for Romantic Love

Working at the Reno post office during the big recession of the 80’s.

Training on the Letter Sorting Machine — one address per second!

Has a keyboard like nowhere else.

When not training, either throwing mail or helping out the mail handlers unloading trucks.

While throwing mail, sometimes the big gal

would come by to chat and even touch me.

She was a couple of inches taller than I, but well proportioned, and was a cheerleader at one time.

The poor old wolf man, resembling Charlie Manson, was responsible for second-class mail — newspapers and such, wished he had never worked for the post office, but had too many years invested to quit.

For the Halloween party I wore a hat with my glasses –“Hey Elton John!”

During a break former prison guard from Carson City uttered barely audibly: “If they get rid of me, I’ll come back and dust this place!” I think he survived, since he kept saying that he wanted to be a mail handler instead of a clerk.

Too broke to buy new glasses, which would have made the training easier no doubt.

Some gal who used to work in a casino finished first.

I was on the last training module, and  it was entirely possible that I would have finished the training second out of about 10 people.

However, supervisor shit-canned me after 10 weeks.

Esther lived on our cul de sac in Arleta (San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles).

She wore her hair in bangs and had glasses.

One day, when I was about 10 years old,  I was over there wearing loose fitting short pants, enabling Esther to sneak her hand up to my private parts. I think she just wanted to see the expression on my face as I was ignoring her –that got my attention!

She only did that once since to do it again would be wrong, and she could always say her hand slipped, but I never mentioned it to anyone.

Since then I’ve always associated  women with bangs and glasses as being friendly.

Whereas on the street just off the cul de sac lived Herb and Flo

with their swimming pool.

One day while visiting over there I removed Flo’s soiled panties from the bathroom hamper, and wore them underneath my clothes.

I was at the college for two years before attending the university.

Devastated, while at the college, by the realization that Michele wasn’t interested in me, I encountered an older woman student named Gladys

there (unusual back then as most people were under 30 years old at the time). She wore a skirt with sneakers and no socks,  which was an attractive look for her, and she was about twice my age.

We used to chat sometimes between classes at the break area near the snack bar –“Get Together” by the Youngbloods blaring from the loud speakers.

One day she offered to drive me home (I usually took the bus), but we stopped at her house instead –“Tea and Symphony” & “The Last Picture Show” ensued.

Later I thought perhaps her husband was watching through a peep hole, or even filming though a one-way mirror, which is better than my getting killed or going to the hospital due to an encounter with a jealous husband!

One day at the outdoor break area/snack bar facility, which had an overhang in case of rain, there was also a stairway you could access to a top observation deck. A hippie looking freak, probably from the university, went up there and observed the mostly apathetic students for awhile, then suddenly blurted out, “There’s a revolution out there!” Almost immediately someone (not me) responded with  “Why don’t you go and join it?”

Riding the bus home that day with the song “Liar Liar” by The Castaways playing in my head, while holding my calculus book.

The Wasteland Years in Los Angeles

Bobby  Fischer moved to South Pasadena not long after becoming world champion by defeating the entire, mighty, Soviet chess system!

Lived in someone’s basement on Mockingbird Lane for awhile. Whereupon moved to Orange Street in Los Angeles near Wilshire and Fairfax.

Existed on the royalties from his two books, and his mother’s social security checks sent by his lovely sister Joan.

Without the big bucks from the Philippines for playing Karpov of the Soviet Union, circumstances got gradually worse.

Occasional trips to Palo alto to visit his sister, who was married to a Stanford scientist, and a trip to Berkeley to visit with the current US champion, which ended in a bad way from Fischer running  up the phone bill of his host.

Amazing how such a genius could devolve into failure.

Always low on money, wearing shabby clothes, without a car, and no romantic love!

Residing in downtown Los Angeles skid-row flop houses, while searching book stores for questionable reading material, and who knows whatever else occurred downtown!?.

Going into coffee shops with a shopping bag containing oranges, and a hand-cranked juicer to make his own fresh-squeezed orange juice for his breakfast.

Time to go back to the 32 pieces and 64 squares!

Director Penny Marshall [Laverne!] knew what she was doing when she dressed Madonna

as a bobby-soxer complete with saddle shoes, and had her dance in the movie!

American pop star Madonna released a cover version of the song (American Pie) in March 2000 to promote the soundtrack to her film The Next Best Thing (2000).

Although I’ve never bought any of her music, I was really impressed with her version of “American Pie” –lovely voice!
